With a highly-anticipated 2015 Sam Houston State soccer season on the horizon, eighth-year head coach Tom Brown added to the jubilation on Friday, announcing the squad's Aug. 30 match against Rice will take place at BBVA Compass Stadium.
The match, scheduled for 4 p.m., will be part of a doubleheader with the National Women's Soccer League's Houston Dash, who will host the Boston Breakers at 7:30 p.m.
“We are very excited about the opportunity to play Rice at BBVA Stadium,” Brown said. “I appreciate the Houston Dash allowing us to play as part of a doubleheader before their game against Boston. BBVA Stadium is a first class soccer facility and the grass surface will be a pleasure to play on.”
Under the same ownership as Major League Soccer's Houston Dynamo, the Dash have shined in two seasons of play, including hosting a record crowd of 13,025 fans to welcome back its returning World Cup champion trio of Carli Lloyd, Meghan Klingenberg and Morgan Brian less than two weeks ago.
“I think that players from both teams will enjoy getting to stay and watch the Houston Dash play,” Brown said. “It is important that we support the NWSL and professional women's soccer in the United States.
“The success of this league is vital to continue to provide a place that our future national team players to develop and play. Coaches such as Randy Waldrum can provide a daily training environment for our elite players.”
The $95 million facility, which holds 7,000 fans in its lower sections and 22,000 total, opened its doors in May 2012 and plays host to the Dynamo, Dash, Texas Southern football as well as a variety of other sporting events and concerts.
The Bearkat soccer program returns nine starters and 15 letter winners to a squad that raked in its highest finish in Southland Conference play, finishing second to Houston Baptist.
Ticket information for the match against the Owls will be released in the coming weeks.
