Sam Houston's Michael Holyfield has been part of a Memphis Grizzlies squad that is off to a 3-0 start in the Southwest Airlines Orlando Pro Summer League hosted by the Orlando Magic at the Amway Center.
The Grizzlies' latest victory in the event saw the team go on a late 19-3 run to force double overtime in a 73-71 victory over the Orlando Blue squad. Memphis defeated the Charlotte Hornets 79-75 in their second game of the tournament earlier this week.
Holyfield, the starting center for the Sam Houston men's basketball team the past four years, had his best scoring performance in the Grizzlies' opening 81-73 victory over the Brooklyn Nets last Saturday. Holyfield scored eight points in 11 minutes in the opening game.
The Grizzlies are one of ten NBA teams participating in the Southwest Airlines Orlando Pro Summer League hosted by the Orlando Magic at the Amway Center.
The 25-game, seven-day event will feature the Grizzlies, two teams from the Magic and the Brooklyn Nets, Charlotte Hornets, Detroit Pistons, Indiana Pacers, Los Angeles Clippers, Miami Heat and Oklahoma City Thunder.
“Michael is having a great time in Orlando,” Sam Houston head men's basketball coach Jason Hooten said. “I've had the opportunity to visit with him each day. This is a great opportunity for Michael to show what he can do.”
Holyfield, a 6-11 four-year letterman from Manzano High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico, helped lead the Bearkats to a record of 80 victories including 24-11 and 26-9 marks his junior and senior years that earned Sam Houston NCAA post-season berths in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament.
Holyfield completed his career as Sam Houston's fourth all-time leader in blocked shots (105) and fifth all-time in rebounds (769). His 86 blocked shots during the 2014-15 season are a school record.
