Ross earns Southland Goalkeeper of Week

Sam Houston State goalkeeper Magen Ross has followed up a strong effort in the net Sunday against Prairie View A&M with being named Southland Conference Goalkeeper of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
The senior recorded five saves during the Bearkats 4-0 victory against the Panthers, notching her second win in as many starts this season.
“I thought Magen stepped in and did a good job,” eighth-year head coach Tom Brown said. “She saved some good opportunities that Prairie View A&M created. She gave us confidence and played a great game and really limited the attack.”
The win improved Sam Houston to 3-3-1 on the season heading into conference play, which begins Friday against Central Arkansas at 6:30 p.m. from Pritchett Field. The Kats were picked to finish second by league coaches in the preseason poll.
The conference accolade was the third of the early season for Sam Houston after senior Mariah Titus was named offensive player of the week and sophomore Caitlin Schwartz secured defensive honors following weekend opening wins at Louisiana-Lafayette and UTSA.
With senior keeper Kylie Hambleton is the squad's regular starter, Brown credits Ross for her ability to take advantage of the opportunities given.
“It's always difficult when you're not getting regular games but she comes in and prepares each day,” Brown said. “She was obviously very prepared for the chances that Prairie View had.”
