For the eighth straight year, the Sam Houston State soccer program has received the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) College Team Academic Award, an honor that recognizes programs that have excelled in the classroom, in addition to their work on the field.
In order to win the award, teams must post a 3.0 grade point average or higher. The Bearkats achieved that, and more, boasting a 3.31 GPA during the 2014-15 academic semester while having 20 student-athletes achieve a 3.0 or higher.
The NSCAA Team Academic award recognizes academic performance and is unique in that every team has the potential for receiving the award that carries with it the following benefits:
- Demonstrates a team's goal-centered focus on their academic priority.
- Recognizes and rewards all team members for commendable academic performance.
- Adds an attractive feature to team members' college resumes that reflects commitment, responsibility, and discipline.
- Teams and team members receive recognition for academic performance through national, campus, conference, and community communication networks.
- Enhances the credibility, credentials, and reputation of a coaching staff and program that can be used in promotion and recruiting.
A total of 867 soccer teams (307 men, 558 women) received the award including eight Southland Conference women's soccer programs.
On the field, the Bearkats were picked second during the preseason by the Southland Conference head coaches and had a league-leading six players selected on the preseason all-conference team.
Sam Houston opened league play with a 2-1 victory against Central Arkansas last Friday and continues its three-game home stand with visits from Houston Baptist on Friday at 6:30 p.m. and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 1 p.m.
