Kats secure strong weekend in New Mexico

With three weeks until the Southland Conference Indoor Championships, Sam Houston track and field posted another strong showing, breaking six school records while seniors Ashley Jenkins and Danielle Demas posted marks ranking them in the top-two nationally.
Demas broke two school records in the 60-meter hurdles, first besting Sabrina Starr's 2014 school mark with an 8.18 in the prelims, then re-took her mark with 8.16 in the finals, taking second overall and first among collegiate competitors.
Meanwhile, Jenkins now owns the top six marks in school history in the weight throw, using her third straight weekend setting a personal-best, this time clearing 70 feet in a top finisher.
In the 800 meters, the Bearkats set records on both sides. Jeffrey Moore bested his previous school record behind a time of 1:50.25 (1:49.26 altitude) taking second in the event, while Camry Grigsby posted a winning time of 2:11.55, altitude converted 2:10.77, besting Alyssa Dooley's mark that has stood since 2013.
Justin Jenkins raked in the second-best time in school history, boasting a 6.75 in the 60 meters preliminaries, before finishing sixth at 6.79. Chris Jefferson also brought home a mark ranking second, putting up a 21.29 in the 200 meters, to finish third.
The men's 4x400-meter relay team finished fourth with the fifth-quickest time in school history at 3:15.68. In the high jump, Tyler Adams posted a leap of 6 feet, 6 inches for third. In the pole vault, Garrett Larson added a personal best and school record 17 feet, 6 1/2 inches, to finish tied for the top mark.
In the women's 400 meters, Kodii Church captured a first-place tie with a mark of 56.09, a mark ranking sixth in program lore.
Elsewhere, Robert Monticone ran a 1:54.06, altitude converted 1:53.40, for his second fastest time indoor or outdoor. Briana McCall also captured an indoor best behind an altitude converted 2:11.26, more than a second faster than the previous school record.
