Maddie Mortimore earned Sam Houston its only point in a 6-1 loss to Louisiana Tech in a non-conference women's tennis dual match Saturday at the McAdams Center in Huntsville.
The senior from the United Kingdom defeated Alba Escalona Perry at number singles 6-3 7-6. The loss to the Techsters evens the Bearkats' season record at 1-1.
Two other Bearkats split sets in their singles matches. Mila Milanovic lost in three to Marta Sramkova at number four singles 6-3 2-6 6-4. Ema Barkovic split with Zoe Chen and then fell in a “super tiebreaker” 10-5 (played since Louisiana Tech had already clinched the victory with four points).
Fabienne Gettwart, Carrie Casey and Caitlyn Mitchell each lost in straight sets at singles numbers one, two and six.
“We fought hard at times today, but we have to fight harder on every point, not just some of them,” Sam Houston head coach Jim Giachino said. “Every point counts and we have to maintain that focus throughout the match.”
Louisiana Tech upped its season record to 2-1. The Techsters opened the contest by winning at number one and three doubles for one point, then won at number one, two, three, four and six singles.
Sam Houston returns to the courts tomorrow afternoon when the Bearkats play host to Prairie View A&M at 1 p.m. in the Kats' third consecutive match this weekend. Friday Sam Houston opened the 2016 schedule with a 7-0 victory over LSU-Alexandria.
