HBU rallies for 67-63 victory over Sam women

Turnovers and personal fouls dogged the Sam Houston women as the Bearkats fell to Houston Baptist 67-63 in a Southland Conference matchup Saturday afternoon at Sharp Gymnasium.

Shernise Robertson led the Kats with 25 points including five three-pointers. The Bearkats were charged with 20 fouls and committed 19 turnovers. Two SHSU starters, Angela Beadle and Kamry Orr fouled out.

The loss drops the Sam women to 8-12 for the year and 4-6 in league play. Led by Anna Strickland with 17 points, HBU upped its mark to 9-10 for the season and 4-5 in the conference.

“We came out and played hard but at the end of the day, we didn't do the little things,” Sam Houston head coach Brenda Welch-Nichols said. “We had 20 turnovers and a lot of those were uncontested. That killed us. We've got to do a better job with shot selection. We got sped up and out of our game. Those are the things we have to correct.”

Despite the foul trouble, Beadle scored 12 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Laurynn McGowen added 11 points. Orr posted five steals.

“Beadle is a great kid and she plays with a lot of heart,” Welch-Nichols said. “I hate the way she went out in this game. She played hard and did what she was supposed to. Things didn't bounce in our favor. She's not a flashy player but she does her job.”

Sam Houston led 19-14 after the opening quarter and held a seven-point, 21-14 lead after a lay-up by McGowen in the second minute of the second quarter. HBU fought back with a 17-7 run to take a 31-28 lead into the locker room at intermission.

The Huskies led by as many as 12 points in the second half, building a 56-44 margin with 6:12 remaining in the game. Sam Houston cut the lead to six points, 62-56, on an Orr lay-up after a steal with 1:57 to play. A three-pointer by Robertson at the buzzer made the final margin four points.

Sam continues its three-game Southland Conference road swing Saturday with a 4 p.m. game at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
