CORPUS CHRISTI – The Sam Houston State women couldn't withstand a 3-point barrage from Texas A&M Corpus Christi in an 81-71 loss to the Islanders on Saturday afternoon at the American Bank Center.
Shernise Robertson led the way for the Kats with 28 point and Angela Beadle added 18, but it wasn't enough for the kats as they fall to 8-13 overall and 4-7 in Southland play.
The Islanders connected on 11-of-21 3's from long range including seven in the first half, building a lead to as much as 14 in the opening frame. In the second half, the Kats cut it to four on several occasions, but each time, the Islanders were able to hit a big shot to extend the lead back to 8.
“We just kept fighting and you have to give it to our girls for that,” said head coach Brenda Nichols. “We got great games from Shernise and Beadle, but need to get some others involved as well. We have to get more of a contribution from our bench.”
The bench points was the difference in the game, as the Islanders got 33 points compared to just nine for the Kats.
As a team, the Kats shot 46 percent from the floor including 6-of-13 shooting from 3-point range. They also converted on 17-of-19 from the free throw line.
In addition to Robertson and Beadle, Jasmine McCants finished the night in double figures in scoring as well with 10. Beadle also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
The Kats will now shift their attention to Abilene Christian for a Wednesday night game in Abilene.
