HAMMOND, La. – Sam Houston State soccer could not slow down Southeastern Louisiana on Friday night, falling 3-0 at the Southeastern Soccer Complex. The Lions jumped ahead in the second minute of the game in the first meeting since the squads were pushed to penalty kicks after a scoreless regulation last season in the Southland Conference Tournament finals.
Sam Houston (2-12-1, 2-4-1 Southland) concludes its brief two-game road trip on Sunday at Nicholls. First touch is scheduled for 1 p.m. from the Nicholls soccer complex. Admission is free to all attendees. Southeastern Louisiana (6-7-2, 3-3-1 SLC) will host Stephen F. Austin on Sunday at 1 o'clock.
First Half
Less than three minutes into the match, Sam Houston fell behind as the Lions' Sofia Olsson scored her first goal of the season on a pass from Casey Peacock. Southeastern converted two goals on just four shots on goal in the opening frame, capitalizing again in the 36th minute as Vanessa Arzaluz put one home for her second goal of the year. The Kats matched with four shots on goal coming as Taylor Pritchard, Bailey Strong, Kaylee Davis and Madison Cannon each posted one.
Second Half
The Bearkats staved off three consecutive Southeastern opportunities including a shot that hit the post in the 51st minute but the Lions extended their lead to 3-0 in the 66th minute. Peacock, who had an assist in the Lions' first goal, lined a shot into the net for her third goal of the season. The Bearkats were held without a shot on goal in the second half while the Lions continued their offensive dominance, finishing with 21 shots including 12 on goal.
KEY STATS
After multi-goal performances in its last two outings, Sam Houston was held scoreless for just the second time in the last seven matches. Bearkat goalkeeper Anna Kaiser registered the third-highest saves this season and second most in a league match, finishing with nine.
