HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The Sam Houston State soccer team returns home this weekend, looking to gain ground in the Southland Conference standings with three regular-season matches remaining.
The Bearkats host Incarnate Word on Friday night with the first 100 students receiving complimentary DoubleDave's Pizzaworks as part of Free Food Friday. Sam Houston is looking to bounce back after a pair of 3-0 losses on the road a weekend ago against Southeastern Louisiana and Nicholls.
Prior to Friday's match, Sam Houston will honor its seven-member senior class. Megan Bennett, Madison Cannon, Kylie Dick, Maddie Gangi, Jordan Jarzombek, Allie Johnson and Maddy Panozzo have left their imprint on the program to the tune of 30 wins, the program's first 10-win season and first trip to the Southland Conference Tournament championship match in a decade.
The Kats enter the match tied with the Cardinals for ninth in the league standings. UIW, like Sunday's opponent in Abilene Christian, is ineligible for the league tournament, placing Sam Houston eighth with the top six qualifying for the event.
In conference matches, Allie Johnson ranks tied for third in goals (5), fourth in shots (24) and fifth in points (11). Goalkeeper Anna Kaiser is fourth in saves per game (6.14) but the Kats have been plagued by difficulty slowing down their opponent, ranking 11th in goals allowed per match (2.38).
UIW heads into the weekend seeking its first victory in six matches. The Cardinals are coming off a 1-1 tie against Lamar. The Cardinals are 11th in the league in goals per game (0.88) but are fifth in goals against average (1.44).
Abilene Christian heads into the weekend second in the conference standings and first in the fewest goals allowed per match (0.62). The Wildcats have logged four shutouts, tied for most in the Southland and have won three straight heading into their Friday match at Stephen F. Austin.
