NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Sam Houston State soccer closes out its 2016 season on Friday, seeking to end the campaign on a strong note and recorded its season-straight victory against Stephen F. Austin. First touch is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will air on ESPN3.
A season ago, Sam Houston snapped the Ladyjacks 32-match league regular-season unbeaten streak, using tenacious defense and a goal from Jordan Jarzombek in the 69th minute to down Stephen F. Austin 1-0. The victory was Sam Houston's first against its in-state rival since 2010.
The Bearkats have dropped five straight but saw considerable improvement in their last action on Sunday, despite a 2-0 loss to Abilene Christian in the home finale. Despite the continued growth, the squad will miss out on its first Southland Conference Tournament since 2008.
Sunday will mark the final match in the career of seven Sam Houston seniors. Allie Johnson, Maddie Gangi, Megan Bennett, Maddy Panozzo, Kylie Dick, Jordan Jarzombek and Madison Cannon each etched their names into Bearkat lore, notching 30 wins highlighted by the program's first 10-win season a year ago in route to the Southland Conference Tournament championship.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
Sam Houston enters the match ranked fourth in the Southland in points per game (3.75) and fourth in goals per match (1.38). Stephen F. Austin comes in third in fewest goals allowed with 0.75 in conference play and has recorded shutouts in two of its last three matches.
