HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Sam Houston State picked up a pair of home wins last week within Southland play and will be looking to extend that win streak this weekend when it hits the road once again to take on Incarnate Word and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The Bearkats knocked off both Nicholls and McNeese State last week and will be getting their first look at the Cardinals this season, but have already squared off once with the Islanders, falling to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in Huntsville in the league opener.
Last week's efforts earned outside hitter Jordyn Vaughn the Southland's player of the week honor, the first for the Kats this season. The junior currently ranks third in the SLC with 3.45 kills per set and just missed a triple-double in Saturday's win over the Cowgirls. Meanwhile, setter Michelle Griffith has stepped things up since entering league play, averaging 12.17 assists per set against conference opponents, leading the SLC in that category.
The Kats will be looking to keep the Cardinals winless in Southland play this year, while the Islanders enter the weekend at 4-0 in the league and are currently riding a 22-game win streak against Southland opponents.
THE SERIES
vs Incarnate Word
Thursday will serve as the fourth meeting between the programs on the volleyball court, all coming since the Cardinals joined the Southland Conference for the 2013 season. The Bearkats are 2-1 in the three previous meetings, winning each of the last two matches in just three sets.
vs Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
The Bearkats lead the all-time series with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi by a 19-12 margin, but have not been able to solve the Islander riddle of late, dropping the last four meetings dating back to 2014. The Islanders already own one win over the Kats this season, taking a 3-0 win in Huntsville on Sept. 20 in the league opener for both teams.
