HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Sam Houston State head men's basketball coach Jason Hooten announced the signing of Jesse “Bubba” Furlong to a National Letter of Intent on Thursday.
Furlong, who will be a senior at Waco's Midway High School this season, averaged 14.0 points, 8.3 rebounds and 3.3 blocks per game as a junior for the Panthers. The 6-9, 240-pound Furlong helped lead the Panthers to a 20-15 record and a berth in the state playoffs a year ago.
“Bubba is a guy we have sought after and recruited hard for two years,” Hooten said on Wednesday. “He's very skilled and very versatile. Probably a bigger version of Aurimas (Majauskas).”
He was named to the Super Centex First team by the Waco Tribune-Herald last season. He was also a fourth-team all-state choice in addition to being named a first team all-district choice and the district's defensive player of the year.
“He can shoot the 3, put the ball on the floor and is a good passer as well as being really effective with his back to the basket. He's someone that we are really excited about having in our program and it is a perfect time because we are losing both of our front line guys and we look forward to being able to team him up with Chidozie (Ndu) for the next four years.”
