The Sam Houston bowling team is on a roll and doesn't look to be slowing down anytime soon. The Bearkats have won three of the first four tournaments of the season, after winning Sunday's Hawk Classic.
Entering as the No. 1 seed, the Bearkats had to rally from behind against the hosts, Maryland Eastern Shore to advance to the finals. The Hawks, stormed out of the gate winning the first three games in the best-of-7 match. But the Kats won the next four to take the match and advance to the finals. They closed out the match with a dominant 269 in the seventh game.
“This win just shows the resilience of this team,” said head coach Brad Hagen. “We are just making shots when we have to and not getting down on ourselves. It would have been easy to give up after getting down 3-0, but they kept fighting.”
In the finals against Monmouth, the Kats were once again forced to a seven-game match, taking the seventh 234-214. It was he first time in four years, the Bearkats have won a tournament going wire-to-wire for the victory, leading at the close of each day.
“This is a big win for us,” Hagen said. “They is a very talented field and to be able to go wire-to-wire for the title is a great result. This was the perfect way for us to close out the first half of the season.”
Heather Penatzer was named to the first-team all tournament squad, while Janine Kuwahara was a second team selection.
