HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Freshman wide receiver Nathan Stewart was named the STATS FCS National Freshman of the Week and the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, while junior defensive end P.J. Hall was named the Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
The weekly honors come after the top-ranked Bearkats' 56-43 win over McNeese. It is the first time since the opening week of the season one school has swept both the offensive and defensive weekly awards from the SLC and the fourth week at least one Bearkat has been among the recipients.
Stewart is just the second wide receiver to win offensive player of the week this year, earning the honor for the first time in his career. The freshman from Dallas had a career night against the Cowboys on Saturday, breaking both the school and conference record for receiving yards in a single game with 12 catches for 268 yards and three touchdowns.
That effort broke Jonathon Cooper's 15-year old record at Sam Houston, while also eclipsing the Southland Conference record, previously held by Ronald Bonner of Jacksonville State in 1997. His 12 receptions left him one reception shy of the school's single-game record as well.
Meanwhile Hall picked up seven tackles against the Cowboys, forcing a fumble and finishing with five tackles for loss. Four of those behind the line of scrimmage were sacks, tying the Sam Houston single-game record and making him just the third Bearkat ever with four sacks in a game.
He was also an honorable mention for national defensive player of the week.
Stewart, Hall and the rest of the Bearkats will now turn their attention to this upcoming Saturday when they travel to Natchitoches, La., to take on Northwestern State.
