Two freshmen, shortstop Ashley Goetz and catcher Emily Bounds, both hit doubles for Sam Houston as the Bearkats lost to Iowa 8-0 on the second day of the Islander Classic softball tournament hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday.
Goetz and Bound's doubles came in the second and third innings of the game, respectively. Iowa totaled its eight runs on seven hits and three Bearkat errors.
Jordan Franks took the loss as the Kats' starter, giving up three hits in three innings. Taylor Atkinson and Brooke Seneshen pitched in relief.
Kelly Killian was the winning pitching, striking out four of the 21 batters she faced.
Sam Houston will complete its participation in the tournament with a rematch with Louisville at 9 a.m. Sunday and a non-conference contest with host A&M-Corpus Christi Sunday afternoon. The Kats lost to Louisville 7-0 Friday afternoon in their season opener.
