The Sam Houston softball team finished its first weekend of the 2016 season with a pair of losses at the A&M-Corpus Christi Islander Classic.
Louisville handed the Bearkats a 6-1 loss and the host Islanders rallied from a two run deficit for a 6-2 win. Sam Houston opened play in the event with a loss to Louisville on Friday and to Iowa Saturday.
The Kats started strong in their tournament finale Sunday afternoon, jumping out to a two-lead lead in the first inning. Center fielder Bailey Watson, who went 2-for-4 in the game, led off with a bunt singles. Watson moved to second when second baseman Dani Allen was safe after an error on an attempt sacrifice bunt. Watson scored on an error and Allen tallied after a single to right field by shortstop Ashley Goetz who finished the contest 3-for-3 at the plate.
Hannah Marino also picked up a hit to bring the Kats total for the game to six.
Sam Houston held on to the lead until the Islanders scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on two walks, two singles and a double. A&M-Corpus Christi added two more run in the sixth to up its season record to 3-1.
Sunday morning, Louisville took advantage of fielding mistakes to earn a 6-1 victory.
Sam Houston opening the game's scoring with a run in the top of the second inning. Catcher Tiffany Castillo singled then reached second on an error. Right fielder Samantha Belongia singled up the middle to score Castillo.
Four errors in the next four innings however allowed four unearned runs. The Cardinals ended the contest with six hits.
Allen and Watson picked up hits for the Bearkat versus Louisville. Lindsey McLeod took the loss, striking out three of the 29 batters she faced. Jordan Franks got the final two outs in the sixth inning.
Sam Houston opens its 2016 home schedule Friday at 3 p.m. when the Bearkats will play host to Prairie View A&M in a doubleheader at the Softball Complex
