The challenging non-conference schedule facing the young Sam Houston softball team doesn't get any easier as the Bearkats take on Texas A&M Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Aggie Softball Complex in College Station.
The Aggies, ranked No. 24 in the nation, went 4-1 in the Texas A&M Classic last weekend. Texas A&M defeated No. 7 UCLA 4-1, posted two wins over Wichita State and one victory over Colorado State. UCLA edged the Aggies in a rematch.
Sam Houston opened with four losses against quality opponents at the A&M-Corpus Christi Islander Classic.
“There were several bright spots for us last weekend,” Bearkat head coach Bob Brock said. “We had four bad innings but played pretty well the rest of the time. You get better playing good teams and we learned a lot about ourselves. With so many newcomers, we're still figuring out a lot of things.”
Two of the bright spots were the play of a pair of freshmen. Ashley Goetz, an infielder from Georgetown, hit .364 with two doubles and an RBI in the four games. Bailey Watson, an outfielder from Montgomery posted a .300 batting average.
Texas A&M has an outstanding freshman as well. Keeli Milligan from Vidor was named as SEC Freshman of the Week after stealing a league-high eight bases during the Aggie Classic while hitting an even .500 (9-for-18) in the leadoff spot.
Wednesday's game will be streamed live on the SEC Network+ available through WatchESPN and the ESPN app.
The Bearkats open their 2016 home schedule with a 3 p.m. doubleheader against Prairie View A&M Friday at the Softball Complex.
