Outfielder Breanna Homer went 4-for-7 at the plate including a run-scoring triple as Sam Houston lost two close softball games at the North Texas Mean Green Softball Classic Saturday.
The Bearkats lost to Creighton 2-1 in their opener and then fell to North Texas 5-2 in the nightcap.
Homer's triple scored third baseman Tiffany Castillo who doubled with one out in the fourth for Sam Houston's lone run in the loss to Creighton.
Creighton pitcher Sydnee Eck struck out 11 of the 26 Bearkat batters she faced. She gave up six hits. Dani Allen, Bailey Watson and Samantha Belongia produced the Sam women's other three hits.
Brooke Seneshan started in the circle and Jordan Franks and Lindsey McLeod each pitched in relief. Franks was credited with the loss.
First baseman Jennie Daro figured in both Creighton's runs. In the third inning, Daro singled up the middle to score centerfielder Kelsey Alexander who reached base on an error. Daro scored the winning run in the fifth after she and right fielder Allie Reinhart each doubled.
North Texas jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning and added two more runs in the fifth as the Eagles totaled seven hits including a double and a triple.
Catcher Katie Doerre put the Kats on the board with a solo home run to left field to lead off the top of the fifth inning. Sam Houston added its second run in the top of the seventh on a single by Watson.
Homer went 2-for-3 in the opener and 2-for-4 against North Texas. Shortstop Ashley Goetz, Castillo and left fielder Emily Bounds also produced hits for the Bearkats in the second game.
Taylor Atkinson started in the circle, taking the loss after giving up six hits and striking out five batters in four-and-a-third innings. McLeod again saw action in relief.
