Bob Brock, Sam Houston's head softball coach, is one victory away from another milestone.
The Bearkats' 2-0 victory over Nicholls Saturday night gives the veteran of 32 seasons of coaching at Baylor, Texas A&M and Sam Houston his 1,099th career win. Only seven active NCAA Division I head coaches and 27 in NCAA softball history have tallied 1100 wins.
The Sam women head south to take on the University of Houston in a non-conference doubleheader at Cougar Softball Stadium Tuesday. First pitch is at 4 p.m. with the nightcap scheduled to start 30 minutes after completion of the opener.
While UH holds a 21-4 advantage all-time versus the Kats, the Bearkat softball team won 2-0 in the two program's last meeting last April in Huntsville.
Houston brings a 12-13 record into the contest after dropping a weekend series with Oklahoma State. Maya Thomas, the Cougars' hitting leader with a .439 average, is the team's top offensive threat. For the weekend against OSU, Thomas hit .636 with a double and two home runs.
Infielders Dani Allen and Ashley Goetz continue to lead the Bearkats in hitting with averages of .359 and .311, respectively. Outfielder Breanna Homer is the team's top long ball hitter with 28 total bases including two doubles, a triple and two home runs.
Brock served as head coach at Baylor from 1980 to 1981 and at Texas A&M from 1982 to 1996. Six times he directed teams to the College World Series, winning national titles in 1982, 1983 and 1987 and finishing as runner-up in 1984 and 1986.
Since returning to his alma mater as head coach, Brock has directed the Bearkats to 368 victories, the most by any head coach in Sam Houston's 35-year softball history. He has coached 21 All-Americans, 60 All-Regional honorees and two members on gold medal winning U.S. Olympic Teams.
Following the doubleheader in Houston Tuesday, the Bearkats return to Southland Conference competition, hosting Northwestern State Friday and Saturday. The Kats and the Demons will duel in a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Friday and a 3 p.m. single game Saturday at the Softball Complex.
