Southland Conference leader A&M-Corpus Christi handed the Sam Houston women's tennis team a 5-2 loss Friday afternoon in Corpus Christi.
Fabienne Gettwart and Maddie Mortimore provided the Bearkats their points with victories at the number one and six singles, respectively.
Gettwart defeated Hortense Boscher 6-3, 6-0 while Mortimore downed Kerry Galhos 6-4 4-6 1-0 (7) in a slugfest. Mila Milanovic went three sets at number five singles with Maider Martin, falling 5-7 7-6 6-1
“The team showed great fight today from everyone,” head coach Jim Giachino said. “They left everything on the courts. We saw improvements in areas that we have worked on in practice, but we still need to take it up a level to close out in matches.”
Mortimore's victory Friday upped her 2015-26 singles record to 17-6. The only senior on the squad, the native of Great Britain now has totaled 54 singles wins during her four years as a Bearkat. That ranks as the seventh highest victory total in SHSU women's tennis history. Just ahead of her in the all-time standings are Peta Taylor (60 wins), Natalie Petaia (58) and Lata Assudani (57).
Sam Houston's road trip to South Texas will continue Saturday with an 11 a.m. match in San Antonio with Incarnate Word.
