The Sam Houston women's tennis team picked up its second Southland Conference dual match victory with a 5-2 win over Incarnate Word Saturday in San Antonio.
Fabienne Gettwart, Mila Milanovic, Maddie Mortimore and Caitlyn Mitchell each won their singles matches and the Kats took the doubles point by winning the number one and three sets. The performance ups the Sam women's season mark to 7-9. The Kats are 2-5 in league play.
“Even with the matches we have lost, we've had exceptional fight from the players and they keep growing,” Sam Houston head coach Jim Giachino said. “Caitlyn Mitchell, who stepped in at number six today, is a good example. She was down 4-0 in the second set and came back to win 6-4. She was down in the super tiebreaker and fought her way back again to win a tough one. This is the fight that we are seeing throughout the team and will take into our next match.”
Gettwart defeated Rachel Sadiq 6-2, 6-3 for her second consecutive victory at number one singles. Milanovic topped Sarah Savedra 6-3 6-2 at number four. Mortimore remained unbeaten in Southland action with a 6-2 6-2 win over Maria Batchinsky at number five. Mitchell beat Clarisa Salinas 13-11 in a super tiebreaker after splitting sets with the match already clinched.
Gettwart and Milanovic won 7-6 (10-8 in the tiebreaker) at one doubles and Mitchell and Mortimore took the number three doubles 6-3.
