Fabienne Gettwart, Mila Milanovic and Maddie Mortimore each won their singles matches but the Bearkats' loss of the doubles point again was the difference as Lamar edged Sam Houston 4-3 in a Southland Conference women's tennis dual match Wednesday at the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center.
Gettwart defeated Katya Lapayeva 7-5 7-5 at the number one singles. Milanovic won over Stephanie Marchena 6-4 6-2 at number five. Mortimore rolled over Teodora Stefanovic 6-4 6-2 at number six.
“All three of our upper classmen played well,” Sam Houston head coach Jim Giachino said. “Fabiene showed how much she has grown as a player, defeating a girl she has never beaten before in straight sets. Maddie and Mila proved that they are the solid rocks of the team with a pair of straight set wins.”
Lamar won the doubles point with victories at number one and three. Khee Yen Wee and Carrie Casey won at number two 6-4.
“We're still not playing doubles the way we do every day in practice,” Giachino said. “The match came down to Khee's third set but it's hard to be successful when injuries slow you down. If we win the doubles point, we win the match.”.
Sam Houston plays its final home match of the season Saturday at 11 a.m. when the Bearkats play host to Abilene Christian at the McAdams Tennis Center.
