Kats Runners-up At Southland Tournament

Carrie Hopkinson and Stephanie Zavala both were named to the all-tournament team as Sam Houston ended as the runner-up in the 2016 Southland Bowling Conference Championships in Kenner, La., Saturday.
Top-seeded Arkansas State won the title by defeating No. 3 Sam Houston State in a 4-0 sweep in the championship match.
Vanderbilt defeated Arkansas State 196-185 in the first game of, but the Red Wolves were relentless as they came back with a 4-1 defeat to advance to the championship match, taking on Sam Houston State.
The Bearkats entered the championship undefeated, but fell in a winner-take-all title game.
“We just ran out of steam,” Sam Houston head coach Brad Hagen said. “It was a tough way to end a great weekend. But we picked up some quality wins again here in Louisiana. Now it's wait until NCAA selection time.”
Arkansas State just topped Sam Houston State in the opening game with a 177-176 win. The Red Wolves continued with momentum winning the reaming games 159-142, 200-152 and 200-155. This is the first Southland Bowling League championship victory for the Redwolves after falling to Vanderbilt last season in the inaugural SBL Championship/
Arkansas State sophomore claimed Most Valuable Bowler, leading her team to victory. The all-tournament team consisted of Zavala and Hopkinson along with Arkansas State's Brooke Woods, Arkansas State's Jadee Scott-Jones and Monmouth's Kaitlyn Reth.
The Southland Bowling League was formed in the fall of 2014 and by the formalization as a league. Southland Bowling League members will be at-large candidates for the NCAA Championship. The NC Bowling Championship is April 14-16 in North Brunswick, N.J.
