Defending champion Demons edge Kats 8-6

A grand slam home run by first baseman Brittney Jones with two out in the top of the sixth inning powered Northwestern State to an 8-6 victory Saturday as the Demons took the rubber game of their Southland Conference softball series with Sam Houston in Huntsville.

The game-winning play came one-half inning after the Kats had the bases loaded with one out in the fifth but could not get a run across.

With the series victory, Northwestern State -- the defending Southland champion and preseason pick to win again in 2016 – lifted their season record to 20-11 and stand 5-4 in league play. But the Demons had to fight off a determined young Sam Houston team.

The Bearkats, now 7-21 on the year and 2-7 in the Southland, jumped out to a first inning three-run lead on third baseman Breanna Homer's fourth home run of the year. The shot to right center scored center fielder Bailey Watson and second baseman Dani Allen who both started the inning with singles.

The Demons trimmed the margin to one run with solo scores in the second and third innings. The turning point in the game were two unearned runs in the top of the fourth. After a pair of ground outs, center fielder Sidney Salmans reached on an error.  Right fielder Kellye Kincannon picked up her eighth home run of the year with a blast to left field to give the Demons a 4-3 edge.

In the fifth, designated player Katie Doerre walked, first baseman Cody Carpenter singles and left fielder Jennie Kieval walked to load the bases with one out. Demon winning pitcher Micaela Bouvier (11-4) struck out the next batter and got the next Bearkat to escape the inning.

Doerre picked up three more runs for the Kats with a home run to left center in the bottom of sixth.

Jordan Frank, Taylor Atkinson and Lindsey McLeod shared duties in the circle with McLeod taking the loss in relief.

Sam Houston plays six games next week, hosting Texas Southern in a Tuesday single game, Louisiana-Monroe in a doubleheader Wednesday and Southeastern Louisiana in a Southland series Friday and Saturday at the Softball Complex.
