The Bearkat volleyball team closed out its 2016 spring schedule with an overall record of eight victories, two losses and two ties after competing in the Stephen F. Austin Tournament in last weekend.
The Sam Houston volleyball started the action in Nacogdoches splitting with Panola College 20-25 and 25-19. The Kats defeated Tyler 25-19 25-10 and Southland Conference rival Northwestern State 25-15 25-20 then split with the host Lumberjacks 25-15 13-15.
“With all our players from last year's squad returning, we really put ourselves in a great position to compete at a high level next fall,” Sam Houston head coach Brenda Gray said. “Our pin-point serving definitely helped to take our opponents out of their system and frustrated them at times. The team showed all-out hustle and competed well in a hostile environment at SFA.”
Blocking leaders included Amanda Gooch, Taylor Cunningham, and Michelle Griffith. Kill leaders for the Kats were Jordyn Vaughn, Brooke White, Cunningham, and Amanda Gooch. Service leaders included Vaughn, Claire Kilpatrick and White. Digging leaders included Kilpatrick, Natalie Nevlud, Cunningham, and Jordyn Vaughn. Setter Michelle Griffith led the squad in assists.
“Overall, we are extremely pleased with our spring play,” Gray said. “We walked off the court healthy and look forward to a productive off-season. Everyone is excited to come back to a newly remodeled Johnson Coliseum this fall and hope the fans will come out to support what will be an exciting team to watch.”
