The Bearkat softball team faces another tough challenge this weekend as they travel west to take on a red-hot Abilene Christian squad. The pair face off in a single game Friday at 6 p.m. and a 12 noon doubleheader Saturday in Abilene.
The Wildcats come into the weekend with victories in six of their last seven games. That includes a 3-1 non-conference win over Texas Tech Wednesday, a series sweep of Incarnate Word and winning two-of-three against Stephen F. Austin.
Taylor Brown and Peyton Hedrick are ACU's top hitters with respective batting averages of .341 and .325. Hannah Null is the squad's ace in the circle with an 11-9 won-lost pitching record and a 3.02 earned run average. The series features two of the Southland's leaders in runs batted in with Breanna Homer of Sam Houston with 34 RBIs and Brianna Barnhill of AUCU with 29.
Abilene Christian, a program with one more season to go to become eligible for Southland Conference post-season play, stands tied for fourth place in the current league standings. The Wildcats and Central Arkansas both own 12-6 Southland marks. ACU stands 19-18 for the year.
Sam Houston is tied for seventh place in the Southland race with Northwestern State. Both own 7-11 marks. The Bearkats are 15-28 overall and are trying to get back on the winning track after dropping seven of their last 10 games.
Dani Allen (.374), Homer (.357), Katie Doerre (.347), Tiffany Castillo (.295) and Ashley Goetz (.288) continue to lead the team in hitting. Lindsey McLeod (7-9, 4.39 ERA) and Taylor Atkinson (7-10, 5.36 ERA) lead the team in the circle.
Following the series in Abilene, Sam Houston will return to Huntsville for the team's final home Southland Conference series of the 2016 season. The Kats will host Incarnate Word Friday and Saturday, April 29-30.
