Kats capture championship, runner-up at SLC

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Sam Houston State women's track and field program has showcased its dominance since the start of the indoor season. With one Southland Conference title behind them, they once again performed when it mattered most.
With 147 points, the Bearkats claimed the 2016 outdoor league title, capturing the top spot for the fifth time in team lore. On the men's side, the squad raked in a second-place finisher with 149 points for the fourth straight top-three finisher at the event.
The women won the event by 42.5 points capped by a 4x400-meter relay title from Kodii Church, Ruth Amaku and Camry Grigsby (3:40.00) to close out the day. For the men, who finished runner-up to Stephen F. Austin, Jeffrey Moore stole the show, finishing as the high-point scorer with 21.
Moore claimed the title in the 1,500-meter run (3:54.58) as well as in the 800 meters (1:52.36). The women's indoor high-point scorer Danielle Demas also did not disappoint outdoors. The senior won the 100-meter hurdles (13.08) and took second in the 200-meter dash (23.80).
Both Bearkats squad notched several key performances to pick up points on the final day including James Endsley who took third in the discus (165 feet, 7 inches) along with teammates Kalvin Singletary in fifth (162 feet, 3 inches) and Aaron Akens in sixth place (158 feet, 7 inches).
Justin Jenkins secured fourth in the 200 meters (21.26) as well as in the 100 meters (10.27). The Kats were also strong in the pole vault behind Garrett Larson's third-place mark (17 feet, 4 ½ inches) while Jay Roberson secured seventh (16 feet, 4 ¾ inches) and Ashton Summers went eighth (15 feet, 11 inches).
In the 400-meter hurdles, William Stark placed fourth (53.84) while on the women's side, Ruth Amaku took second (58.82). In the 800 meters, Briana McCall (2:10.42) finished runner-up while Grigsby took fourth (2:11.39).
Paula Smith secured fourth in the 100-meter dash (11.73) while Church went sixth in the 400-meter dash (56.40). William Stark took third in the men's 110-meter hurdles (14.21) followed closely by teammate Damian O'Neal in fifth place (14.40).
Evan Arambula joined Moore in the 1,500 meters, taking sixth (3:58.59). Tyler Adams also continued his strong weekend finishing runner-up in the high jump (3:58.59), contributing another eight points.
In the 5K, Chris Speaks took fifth (15:02.67) for the men while Ana Moreno finished eighth (18:01.62) for the women. In the final men's event, the 4x400-relay squad of Kevin Beasley, Robert Monticone, Jenkins and Moore secured fifth (3:16.46).
