Sam Houston State senior Danielle Demas has generated her share of electric performances with the Bearkats track and field program. She may have saved the best for last.
Demas ran a 12.97 (+1.7) in the 100-meter hurdles prelims to take seventh at the NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships and qualify for Saturday's finals from Eugene, Ore. The mark is both a school record and qualifies Demas for the U.S. Olympic Trails while solidifying her mark as a first-team All-American.
Demas earned her spot in the field with an eighth place time of 13.11 at the NCAA Division I West preliminary competition at the University of Kansas a week ago. The race marks the senior's second trip to the national championships. She placed 10th last year with a 13.05 mark in the 100 hurdles.
In the women's hammer throw, senior Ashley Jenkins secured 12th with a toss of 200 feet, 10 inches. The result follows last year's ninth-place result in the event. Jenkins closes out her career holding each of the program's top five spots all-time in the event while claiming the Southland championship two straight years.
Fellow senior Elizabeth Lyssy took 23rd in the javelin throw with a toss of 146 feet, 6 inches. Lyssy entered the NCAA West Preliminary Competition in Kansas seeded 42nd of 48 before finishing among the top 12 to qualify and logged eight top-three finishes during the outdoor campaign.
