
Jenkins 14th At Olympic Trials

Ashley Jenkins placed 14th in the women's hammer throw Wednesday afternoon in the 2016 Olympic Trials at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
The Sam Houston senior threw 63.14 meters on her opening throw. The mark placed her in third place in the day's opening flight. Jenkins fouled on her second attempt and posted a mark of 60.72 meters on her final effort.
The top nine competitors in both the first and second flights advanced to the finals. Maggie Ewen of Florida State was the ninth qualifier for the final three rounds with a toss of 66.35 meters.
Deanna Price of Southern Illinois (73.09 meters) and Nike Track Club members Gwen Berry (72.04) and Amber Campbell (72.02) earned places on the United States team for the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in August as the top three finishers in the hammer.
Jenkins entered this week's competition in Eugene with the 21st best qualifying mark in the event.
Another Bearkat senior, Danielle Demas, will compete Thursday at 7 p.m. (Huntsville time) in the women's 100 meter hurdles at the trials.
The trip to Oregon marks both athlete's second visits to Eugene this summer. Jenkins finished 12th at the NCAA Championships with a mark of 61.22 meters. Demas finished seventh in the NCAA hurdles event. Both earned All-America honors for their efforts.
