Sam Houston drops weekend finale at Rice
9/5/2016 10:18:00 AM | Soccer
Sam Houston State soccer took a season-high 11 shots with six shots on goal but couldn't manage to snap its losing streak, falling 5-0 to Rice on Sunday in Houston.
After a 54-minute weather delay seven minutes into the game, Sam Houston (0-6) kept even with the Owls (2-1-1) through the opening 35 minutes.
It was in the 36th minute that Rice was able to take the lead off an SHSU own goal, and the Kats weren't able to provide an answer back.
Sophomore forward Lindsey Bienski received the start on top and managed a team-high four shots. Seniors Allie Johnson, Madison Cannon and Maddy Panozzo, sophomore Micaela Birt and freshmen Taylor Pritchard and Kaylee Davis each forced the Rice keepers – Samantha Colley and Maya Hoyer - to make a save.
Rice doubled the lead right before half when Jessica Johnston stole the ball in close range and put it home.
The Owls finished two corner kicks in the second half. Rice's Erin Mikeska and Allie Gonzalez were able to finish the set piece plays in the 68th and 89th minute, respectively. Samantha Chaiken scored her first goal of the season in the 71st minute.
The Bearkats head into this weekend still searching for its first win in 2016. A loss on Friday would give the Kats its worst losing streak since their nine-game losing streak in 2005. That season ended with the Kats making its first appearance in the Southland Conference championship.
SHSU will travel to Idaho State on Friday before heading to Utah State on Sunday. These are the last non-conference matches before opening SLC play against Central Arkansas on Sept. 16.
The Bearkats will finish its historic nine-game road swing at Houston Baptist and Texas A&M Corpus Christi and will return to Pritchett Field on Sept. 30 against McNeese State.
