HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State football program will hold walk-on tryouts on Tuesday, Jan. 31 at 8 a.m. in the team meeting room on the bottom floor of the athletic fieldhouse (620 Bowers Blvd.).
In order to try out, participants must be enrolled in 12 hours at Sam Houston State and bring proof of current health insurance. Additionally, individuals must show they have received a current physical – taken within one year of the try-out date – and have received certification by the NCAA Eligibility Center.
Participants must meet with the Sam Houston athletic training staff prior to the try-out date to show proof of insurance and physical. Approval is needed from the athletic trainers by Friday, Jan. 27 to ensure all paperwork submitted is approved. If an individual does not receive approval by the athletic trainers, they will not be permitted to try out.
Participants must bring their own cleats and clothes to work out and any further questions can be directed to Bearkats running backs coach Zack Patterson at znp002@shsu.edu.
Last season, the Bearkats posted a 12-1 record while notching the second undefeated regular season in program history on the way to the Southland Conference championship. After starting the season and the second-ranked team nationally, Sam Houston climbed to the top spot by mid-October.
Sam Houston has advanced to the FCS Playoffs each of the last six years, owning 68 wins during that time. That mark ranks fourth in Division I football, trailing only North Dakota State, Alabama and Clemson.
