FRISCO – Sam Houston State guard John Dewey III has been named the Southland Conference player of the week as announced by league officials on Monday.
The sophomore from Bronx, N.Y., was stellar in leading the Bearkats to a pair of double-digit wins last week over Lamar and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and running Sam Houston's win streak to six in a row.
He is the second Bearkat to win the league's weekly honor, joining teammate Christopher Galbreath Jr. who was named the SLC Player of the Week in consecutive weeks earlier this season.
He averaged 16.5 points and 6.5 assists per game in the two victories and enters this week leading the Southland with 5.5 assists per contest, including 6.3 per game in conference-only action. He also hit 60 percent of his shots from the floor and nailed six of nine tries from behind the arc.
Dewey connected on four of six triples on his way to 14 points and eight assists with just one turnover on Thursday in leading the Kats to a win over Lamar. Three of those shots from long distance and half of his assists came in the second half of that game as Sam Houston turned a one-point halftime advantage into a 22-point victory.
Two nights later he picked up right where he left off, putting up 16 of his 19 points in the opening half against the Islanders. Dewey finished with five assists and a pair of steals for the game, while hitting seven of his nine shots from the field.
The wins pushed the Bearkats' overall mark to 15-6 on the season and to 6-2 in league play, just a half game back of New Orleans for the top spot in the standings. Dewey and the Kats will next be in action on Saturday when they host Southeastern at Johnson Coliseum
