SCOUTING THE BEARKATS
The Bearkats return eight positional starters from a team that went 42-22 a season ago in route to winning both the Southland Conference regular season and tournament championship. Sam Houston made its 10th NCAA Tournament appearance, advancing to the Lafayette Regional.
Sam Houston will play 23 of its first 25 games at home beginning with the weekend opener, Feb. 17-19, against Nevada. The 34 total home games are the most for Sam Houston since 2009 and includes a combined five games against 2016 NCAA Regional teams as well as visits from Texas and Baylor.
Sam Houston welcomes back four players who finished the 2016 ranked in five top-20 statistical categories. Catcher Robie Rojas led the country in runners caught stealing (30) while pitcher Heath Donica was 18th in victories (10) and 20th for complete games (4). Offensively, Andrew Fregia finished 11th nationally with seven triples and Bryce Johnson was 20th with 90 base hits.
QUOTABLES
Head coach Matt Deggs on the number of home games…
“We compiled a schedule that includes 34 home games, which is the most this program has seen in a while. We have an absolutely great environment. We will put a 1,000-plus each night which is a huge advantage for us and was a big reason we won 22 games at home a season ago.”
Head coach Matt Deggs on the formidable schedule…
“Jay Sirianni does a great job putting our schedule together. It's one of the benefits to being located where we are and having the facilities we do. We are able to draw some top-25 caliber schools. It's a big factor in what we're trying to do in achieving a top-40 RPI. You have to be willing to playing anyone, anywhere, anytime.”
