
School records fall at Victor Lopez Classic

HOUSTON – Ana Moreno and Jeffrey Moore broke Sam Houston State school records and several others advanced up performance lists, highlighting action at the 35th Annual Victor Lopez Classic at Rice.
Moreno paced action in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, racing to a school-record mark of 10:44.53, over nine seconds faster than the second-place competitor. Likewise, it was Moore who led the field in the 1,500-meter run, sporting a new program-best 3:48.57.
The mark ranks Moore 27th nationally and tops in the Southland Conference. Moreno, who broke a 10-year-old school record, moved up to 23rd in the country and first in the league.
Meanwhile, Tristyn Allen set a new personal-best in the long jump, capturing the top spot in the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 10 ¼ inches. The distance moved the sophomore up to 18th nationally and first in the conference. Allen also took fourth in the triple at 40 feet, 11 ½ inches, which checks in at 25th in the country and tops in the league.
Evan Arambula posted a major result in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, running 9:14.23 to finish third among the 18-member field. The time clocks in as the 19th-fastest nationally this outdoor season and is a new personal-record for the four-year letterman.
Sam Houston flexed its muscle in the men's pole vault, courtesy of performances from a pair of underclassmen. The Bearkats went 1-2 in the event as sophomore Ashton Summers captured the title followed by freshman Bailey Henderson, each vaulting 16 feet, 2 ¾ inches, and ranking 38th nationally.
In the women's pole vault, Hannah Callaway made major waves reaching 12 feet, 11 ¾ inches to finish second in the event. The runner-up for the event indoors moved up to 36th nationally, just one spot back of the conference lead.
Freshman Baylee Lara took home fourth in the 100-meter hurdles, trailing only competitors from Texas and Tulane with a time of 13.72. The result, which came in her first time competing in the event, ranks 42nd nationally and fourth among all Southland members.
Running unattached, Briana McCall posted a first-place time of 2:10.21 in the 800-meter run. Teammate Camry Grigsby (2:12.81) and Jamie Eckford (2:14.78) went fifth and eighth respectively while securing the top-two times in the Southland through two meets.
Joining Moore in the 1,500 meters, senior Chris Speaks secured the league's third-best time with a mark of 3:52.80 in a sixth-place finisher. Likewise, Nicole Aponte secured sixth in the women's 1,500 meters at 4:30.72, the league's second best mark.
In the 5,000 meters, Olivia Olguin captured eighth (17:55.09) and Hannah Tarrant secured 10th (18:19.08). With the results, the duo now ranks second and fifth in the league respectively.
William Stark produced a nice weekend, taking fifth in the 400-meter hurdles (53.76) and sixth in the 110-meter hurdles (14.57). The mark of 14.57 is a personal best for the senior and ranks him fifth in the league. Stark is also fourth in the 400-meter hurdles following the strong result at Rice.
The women's 4x400-meter relay squad of Jamie Eckford, Aaliyah Lane, Nicole Aponte and Meaghen Seales took sixth with a time of 3:51.57. The result was the fastest on the weekend for a Southland competitors and moves the group into fifth on the league's performance list.
In the hammer throw, freshman Yarixza Rivera impressed, finishing third with a distance of 173 feet, 7 inches. The mark ranks second in the league and continues the hot start to the outdoor season, which began with a sixth-place finisher at UTSA last time out.
