
Kats excel in final regular season tune-up

HOUSTON – The Bearkats came away with some big results in their final regular-season tune up on Friday at the Tom Tellez Invitational, hosted by the University of Houston from the Carl Lewis International Complex.
FIELD EVENTS
Kristine Hanks secured the top spot in the shot put with a distance of 48 feet, 9 ½ inches, while Halie Daniel went fourth at 44 feet, 7 inches. The men were equally as impressive in the event, as Michael Nichols secured runner-up at 57 feet, 9 inches, and Joshua Hernandez took seventh (51 feet, ¾ inches).
Nichols added a ninth-place finisher in the discus at 150 feet, 8 inches while Hernandez captured a runner-up result in the hammer at 207 feet, 5 inches. In the women's discus, Tasha Crosse took first with a distance of 155 feet, 11 inches.
Yarixza Rivera took fourth to lead off the day in the hammer throw behind a toss of 177 feet. Jay Roberson and Ashton Summers finished tied for second in the pole vault, each with a height of 16 feet, 1 ¾ inches.
In the women's javelin, Courtney Lord took home a seventh-place result with a toss of 102 feet. Meanwhile, Tristyn Allen logged another top-five finisher, taking fifth in the long jump behind a leap of 19 feet, 2 ½ inches while teammate Darian Bucknor took 16th at 16 feet, 7 inches.
Allen's impressive day continued in the triple jump as she took runner-up at 40 feet, 10 ¼ inches. Jasmine Lipscomb followed behind in third at 39 feet, 8 ¾ inches and Bucknor took sixth (39 feet, 2 ¼ inches).
The men placed a trio of athletes in the top-15 in the long jump, led by Dylan Elliott's eighth-place, 23 feet, result. Kagan Angers took 10th with a leap of 28 feet, 8 ½ inches while Saige Revell captured 15th at 21 feet among 20 competitors. Revell also added a sixth-place finisher in the triple (46 feet, 11 inches).
In the high jump, Morgan Heinrich secured seventh at 5 feet, 3 inches, while Baylee Lara took eighth at the same mark. Meanwhile, in the pole vault, Cameron Boedeker finished third at 12 feet, 7 ½ inches while teammate Hannah Callaway secured fourth with the same height. Lauren Labay finished eighth at 11 feet, 7 ¾ inches.
Elsewhere, in the high jump, Coree Compton took fourth (6 feet, 4 ¾ inches) and Derek Williams came in fifth (6 feet, 4 ¾ inches).
TRACK EVENTS
Nicole Aponte captured a runner-up finish in the 800-meter run at 2:10.71 while Jamie Eckford captured fourth at 2:11.45. Teammate Meaghen Seales took ninth (2:17.92) and Rebekah Goth went 10th (2:18.44).
Baylee Lara added a second-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.81. Avery Zamzow finished 11th at 15.22. Elsewhere, the Bearkats' 4x400-meter relay squad of Teona Spivey, Aaliyah Lane, Camry Grigsby and Rebekah Groth ran 3:56.78.
Chris Jefferson continued his strong season to the tune of a second-place, 10.38 in the 100-meter dash. Teammate Bryan Henderson took 10th at 10.66. Chris Jefferson took third in the 200-meter dash at 20.95 while Ethan Woods ran 21.98 in 14th.
Jordan Grady shined in the 400-meter dash, taking third at 54.96 while Teona Spivey took sixth at 56.62 and Aaliyah Lane secured 12th with a time of 58.55.
In the 1,500-meter run, Lizzy Duenes captured eighth at 4:56.53 while Kassandra Luna finished ninth (5:12.11). In the men's 400-meter dash, Zachary Gasca secured a sixth-place result at 48.18 and Eric Pouncy finished 10th at 48.79.
In the 110-meter hurdles, William Stark and Fabian McCall went 7-8 at 14.51 and 14.53 while Grant Finney finished 11th (15.60). McCall was also involved in the second-place 4x100-meter relay squad, joining Lawrence Coleman, Bryan Henderson and Chris Jefferson at 41.15.
The Bearkats' 4x400-meter relay team of Gasca, Pouncy, Ethan Woods and Coleman also took second at 3:13.84.
Moesha Straughter took 13th in the 100-meter dash with a mark of 12.17 while Charity Thomas secured 18th at 12.30. In the 200-meter dash, Thomas added an 18th-place finish to her resume at 25.11.
