HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State Bearkats kicked off preparations for the upcoming 2017 season on Thursday morning, opening up fall camp at Bowers Stadium.
The Kats kick off the season on August 27 against Richmond, and thus are one of the first teams in the nation to open fall practice. The team reported to camp on Monday with position meetings being conducted each day this week, along with other orientation items and meetings leading up to the opening of practice.
Coach K.C. Keeler's squad will have five practices before going live for the first time on August 1 with three scrimmages currently scheduled for August 7, August 13 and August 17. In all, there will be 21 practices leading up to game week against the Spiders.
“We've had a good week of meetings and kind of setting the schedule for what we are going to be doing,” Keeler said. “These first few practices are all about the newcomers and getting them familiar with our schedule and how we go about things.”
Over 100 players have reported to camp, including eight starters from last year's record-setting offense that averaged 49.5 points per game.
The season opener against Richmond is set for a 6 p.m. kickoff at Bowers Stadium on August 27 and will be a national broadcast, aired live on ESPNU.
