HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston State closes out its season-high four-match homestand this weekend, facing A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday and Houston Baptist on Sunday from Pritchett Field.
The opener will be another Free Food Friday sponsored by 3 Spoons Yogurt with the business offering treats while supplies last. The match will be at 6:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on YouTube via Bearkat Sports Network.
Fans are encouraged to be aware of southbound lane closings along I-45 between New Waverly and FM 1375 which begins at 8 p.m. Traffic will be diverted southbound onto one lane of northbound I-45, which will likely create delays for motorists in both directions.
The Bearkats are looking to pick up their first Southland Conference victory after falling 2-1 to Central Arkansas last Friday. Sam Houston showed renewed energy in the second half, outshooting the Bears by three while picking up a goal from Lindsey Bienski in the 67th minute.
Sam Houston is 4-0 all-time against the Islanders since the conference rivals began playing in 2013. A season ago, the Kats picked up one of their two victories in the campaign against A&M-Corpus Christi, downing the Islanders, 3-1 on the road.
Meanwhile, the Bearkats are 5-3-3 all-time against HBU and notched a 2-2 tie against the Huskies a year ago in Houston. Sam Houston fell 1-0 last time at Pritchett against the Huskies but came back and bounced HBU from the league tournament later in the season.
Following the weekend, Sam Houston will hit the road for three consecutive in league play beginning with matches at Lamar and McNeese. The Kats are 1-3 away from Pritchett with the victory coming on Aug. 18 in the season opener against CSU Bakersfield from Edinburg.
QUOTEABLES:
Head coach Tom Brown on the focus entering the weekend…
“We needed to focus on how we played in the second half against Central Arkansas and not the first half. The intensity of that half needs to be the standard for games and training. We are also focused on how we attack and look to get more numbers forward. We have been a little too conservative in our buildup and need to be more aggressive attacking the offside line.”
Head coach Tom Brown on the impact of the newcomers…
“Our newcomers have had a positive effect on the team. I also think that our returners desire to not have a repeat of last season has been a tremendous impact. Quite a few of our freshman have started for us and all of our mid-year transfers have started most games.”
Coach Tom Brown on facing A&M-Corpus Christi and HBU…
“Corpus is similar to us in that they like to build play and knock the ball around. Houston Baptist is more direct and athletic and will attack more quickly. We will have to adjust to the change in styles from our two opponents.”
