The first day of the season is in the books and the Bearkats are on top of the standings at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational.
The Kats posted a 4-1 record on the open day of competition and hold a 132-pin lead over second place Louisiana Tech.
“I used a lot of different line ups today and everyone contributed,” said head coach Brad Hagen. “We did a good job filling holes and picking each other up throughout the day which we need to continue building on if we want to win defend our title.”
The Kats started the day with a 43-pin win over the hosts from Tulane, followed by a 294-pin win over Grambling. They dropped their only match of the day against Louisiana Tech, falling 978-880.
The Kats kick started the second half of their day with a big 194-pin victory over SFA and wrapped up the day with a 1,026 game, their best of the day in a win over Jackson State.
“Besides controlling the emotions out of the gate, the next toughest item with this event is our crosses,” Hagen said. “This field has a lot of different styles and we need to stick to our game plan throughout the weekend.”
The Bearkats will bowl five more matches on Saturday, starting off the day with Alabama State. The top four squads in the 14-team event will compete for the championship on Sunday, where the Bearkats will look to defend last season's title.
