HUNTSVILLE – With just six games left on the Southland Conference slate, the Sam Houston State Bearkats are in the midst of the hunt for a league title and can make a big step toward that end result this week with road matches at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Houston Baptist.
Each match can be followed via live stats and will have a live video stream from the host institution. Fans can also get updates by following @BearkatsVB on Twitter.
The Bearkats enter the week's matches riding a seven-match win streak and sitting at 9-1 in league play, tied for second with Abilene Christian and one match behind league-leading Stephen F. Austin.
Much of that comes in part to a Bearkat defense that is holding opponents to just .147 hitting, a mark that leads the league. The Kats also lead the SLC with 17.3 digs per set with both Madison Wallace and Taylor Cunningham ranking in the top 12 in the league in that category.
Cunningham continues to be a force each time out and recently claimed SLC Player of the Week honors for the fourth time this season last week. Her 3.94 kills per set continues to lead the league and she also ranks in the top 10 in attack percentage (.330) and blocks per set (1.07).
Sam Houston will be looking to complete its first season sweep of the Islanders since 2012 and snap a seven-match losing skid on the Island since that same year. The Kats held off AMCC earlier this season in five sets earlier this month, but still have dropped 11 of the past 13 matches in the series, one SHSU still leads by a 22-16 margin.
The Kats will also be going for the season sweep of HBU, looking for the first season sweep of that series since the 2013 campaign. Sam Houston swept the Huskies on Oct. 16 in Huntsville, and will be looking to make it back-to-back wins at Sharp Gym after a five-set comeback victory on HBU's home floor a year ago.
