The Sam Houston bowlers have positioned themselves for their first tournament win of the season after a 3-2 day at the Warhawk Invitational in Milwaukee.
The Kats stand in fourth place and will play Nebraska on Sunday morning with a spot in the semifinals on the line.
After going 5-0 on Friday, the Bearkats faced a tough test on Saturday taking on three of the top teams in the country. Sam Houston opened the day with a big win over No. 2 McKendree before falling to No. 5 Arkansas State and No. 1 Vanderbilt. They bounced back with wins over Elmhurst and Central Missouri and claimed the last spot in the championship bracket, edging out the hosts, Wisconsin-Whitewater by 61 pins.
“Today was a matter of doing what we needed to give ourselves a chance,” said head coach Brad Hagen. “We knew it was going to be a tough test today, and overall, I'm happy with the way the team bowled today.”
Hayley Connelly was a big part of the success for the Kats on Saturday. The sophomore led the way for Sam Houston with a 202 average, including a 245 in her final game of the day. Madysen Keller was right behind with a 201 average. Elise Chambers stepped up late for the Kats, bowling a team-high 257 and had an average of 241 in the final two matches of the day.
The Kats will enter Sunday as the No. 4 seed and will take on the third-seeded Nebraska. McKendree is the No. 1 overall seed and will face Arkansas State in the other match of the championship bracket.
