With wins against the No. 1 and No. 3 teams in the nation, the Sam Houston bowlers finished the Warhawk Classic with the third-place trophy in their best weekend of the season.
Entering the day as the No. 4 seed, the Kats opened with a win against Nebraska, taking the seventh game by nine pins. After a loss to Arkansas State, they bounced back with a win over Vanderbilt, the top ranked team in the country.
“Poise was the key today and making quality shots in the moments where it was at a premium,” said head coach Brad Hagen. “Today and last Sunday really reflected that we have what it takes in the tank to compete at a high level.”
The Kats saved their best for last in the third-place match against Vandy. They averaged 220 in the five games, dispatching the defending national champs 4-1.
The win against Vandy put a cap on a great weekend for Sam Houston. They finished with a 10-3 record, with seven wins coming against top-20 teams, including wins against the top three teams in the country, having also beat McKendree on Saturday.
“We have to build on this weekend and continue to bowl well,” Hagen said. “It's another quick turnaround for us and we need to carry this over to Delaware next weekend.”
The Kats will be back in action again on Friday at the UMES Hawk Classic.
