HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State Bearkats will close out the 2018 season on Saturday when they travel to Houston Baptist for a 2 p.m. matinee game at Husky Stadium.
The game will be aired on the Southland Digital Network with Tom Franklin and Ken Moore on the call. Fans can also listen on KSAM 101.7 FM with Kooter Roberson, E.P. Garth and Brian Adams bringing the action over the airwaves.
LEFTOVERS FROM A 17-10 LOSS TO ABILENE CHRISTIAN ...
- Nathan Stewart and Ty Brock hooked up for an 88-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter that gave the Bearkats a 10-7 lead at the time. The play was tied for the sixth-longest pass play in Bearkat history and the longest since Brett Hicks hit Brandon Perry for a 94-yard touchdown in the 2006 season.
- The loss was the second for the Bearkats at Bowers Stadium in 2018. It marks the first time since 2008 that the Bearkats have dropped multiple games at home in the same season.
- Brock connected on 19 of 34 passes and for 316 yards, the fifth 300-yard game of the season for the redshirt freshman. In his last 3 games he has posted a 64.2 completion percentage and 32.6 pass attempts per game and after just posting a 54.0 completion percentage and 43.5 pass attempts per game in his previous four starts.
- The Kats were right in the game with a chance to win despite ACU running 22 more offensive plays, holding the ball for nearly 10 minutes more of game time and racking up 28 first downs to just 13 for the Kats. That was much in part to four big plays of 30+ yards by Sam Houston that set up their 2 scores.
WITH A BEARKAT WIN …
- K.C. Keeler would win his 226th career game. He is currently 15th all-time among FCS head coaches, 6 wins ahead of former Wofford coach Mike Ayers and former SHSU coach Ron Randleman. He is 3 wins behind former Ohio State and Youngstown State head coach Jim Tressell for 14th all-time among coaches who spent at least 10 years at FCS schools. His 226 victories are the third most among active coaches in the FCS.
- Keeler would also win his 52nd game as head coach of the Bearkats and would move into a tie for eighth in the all-time top 10 among Southland Conference coaches with former ULM head man Pat Collins. His 52nd win would also put him just 2 wins behind J.W. Jones for third place all-time at SHSU.
- Sam Houston would assure itself of its ninth consecutive winning season. The Kats have not had a sub-.500 campaign since the 2009 team went 5-6. The current 8-year streak of winning seasons is the longest in school history with the next most being 5 in a row from 1952-56 under Paul Pierce.
- The Kats would close out the regular season with a victory for the fifth sixth straight season, not having lost a regular season-finale since a 49-31 loss at Central Arkansas in 2013.
