HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State Bearkat volleyball team has already secured one of the top seeds in the upcoming Southland Conference Tournament, but will look to build some momentum heading into the tournament on Saturday when it concludes the 2018 regular season against Abilene Christian at Moody Coliseum.
The match can be followed via live stats or watched live on ACUSports.com. Fans can also get updates as they occur by following @BearkatsVB on Twitter.
Coach Brenda Gray's squad has already wrapped up no lower than the No. 3 seed in next week's league championship due to Thursday's league results. The Kats are currently two games ahead of ACU with one match to play, and one behind UCA who owns the tiebreak over Sam Houston.
On the flip side, ACU has already secured the No.4 seed in the tournament. Meanwhile, the remainder of the seeds are still to be determined with five teams within a game of one another for each of the final four seeds.
A win by the Kats would give them 21 victories this season, and would equal the 2012 team's 21 wins, which are the most wins by an SHSU team since the 1996 squad won 25 matches and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. It would also give the Kats a season sweep of the Wildcats, which would mark the first time the team has swept ACU in a two-match season series since ACU joined the SLC.
Taylor Cunningham's 3.87 kills per set is still leading the league and she is seeking to become the second straight Bearkat, and the fourth in the last six seasons to lead the SLC in kills per set. Meanwhile, Madison Wallace's 5.31 digs per set in league-only matches continues to be the best in the league, nearly a half-dig more per set than any other player.
