HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State Bearkats can make big strides in its quest towards a Southland Conference title this weekend when it travels to Lake Charles for a three-game series against defending conference champion McNeese, beginning Friday night at Joe Miller Ballpark.

Coach Justin Hill, who captured his 150th win as the Cowboys' head coach on Tuesday over ULM, has guided McNeese to wins in seven of their last eight games overall and each of their last three weekend series. That run within the league has surged the Cowboys up the SLC standings into a tie with Southeastern Louisiana in a tie for second place.
Sam Houston, meanwhile, has won each of its six SLC series this season, but had to come back last weekend to keep that streak alive. The Kats dropped the opener against Central Arkansas, 13-2, before rallying to take the final two games of the series and maintain a 2.5-game lead in the SLC rankings. Andrew Fregia caught fire last week, picking up three multi-hit games in the Kats' last four outings, including the first multi-home run game of his career.
Even though the Bearkats and Cowboys have met 147 times in a series dating back to 1958, trips to Lake Charles have been few and far between for Sam Houston in recent years. This weekend will mark the first time Sam Houston and McNeese have faced off in a three-game weekend series in Lake Charles since 2012 when the Kats walked away with wins in two of three games. The teams have played 12 games against each other since that series with only an 18-6 win by the Kats in a midweek game in 2014 having been played in Lake Charles.
