HUNTSVILLE - The Sam Houston State soccer team changed things up when they finally returned to Pritchett Field after a three-game road swing.
Instead of keeping the fans on the edge of their seats in their previous victories this season by coming from behind, the Bearkats jumped out to an early lead and shut out Southeastern Louisiana 2-0 Friday evening.
Sam Houston State has now won two Southland Conference matches in a row to improve to 6-7-1 overall and 4-2-1 in league play, while the Lady Lions fell to 2-11-1 on the season and 1-6 in conference.
Coach Brown knew SLU was better than the Lady Lions' record indicated. It was a "tough match" and a "good win" as we battle for an SLC tourney berth. #EatEmUpKats pic.twitter.com/iJRYgaxVwA

The Bearkats took the lead in first half when freshman Rachel Downey lobbed a pass downfield for fellow freshman Alyssa Austin. The Mississippi State transfer raced between two defenders toward the front right side of the box and soared the ball past SLU goalkeeper Sophie Wendt into the top right corner of the net for her first goal of the season in the 21st minute.
Sam Houston State added an insurance goal in the second half on amazing shot by sophomore Caitlyn McDonald in the 53rd minute.
After the Bearkats drew a free kick, McDonald soared the ball from about 58 yards out over Wendt's outstretched arms into the middle of the net for her second goal of the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Tatum Krueger was solid between the posts for Sam Houston State. She saved four of the Lady Lions' five shots.
The Bearkats will host Nicholls Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. as they look to stretch their SLC winning streak to three.
