HUNTSVILLE – A big weekend is in the crosshairs for the Sam Houston State volleyball team with a pair of road matches this weekend at first-place Stephen F. Austin and Abilene Christian, starting Thursday in Nacogdoches.
With eight matches remaining in the regular season, the Bearkats sit in a tie for second place with Northwestern State in the 13-team league, two games back of SFA and a game up on A&M-Corpus Christi.
They will have their work cut out for them on Thursday in a game that can be watched on ESPN+ and heard on KSHU 90.5 FM. Both matches for the week can be followed on live stats, in addition to @BearkatsVB on Twitter.
The match will feature two head coaches in Brenda Gray and Debbie Humphreys who each eclipsed the 700-win marks for their careers earlier in the season.
The Kats opened up with wins in each of their first six SLC matches of the year before splitting their last four. Since the beginning of SLC play, the Ladyjacks and Kats are the top two in the league in opponent's hitting percentage. For SHSU, Ashley Lewis is averaging 3.84 kills per set against SLC opponents, while Kaira Hunnicutt (1.32 bps) and Addison Miller (5.39 dps) each rank second in blocks and digs.
Sam Houston will be going for its first win in Nacogdoches since 2013, and its second consecutive win in Abilene in a series the Kats lead 8-3 all-time. The Wildcats got off to a nice start to league play, winning its opening two matches, but have since lost eight of their last nine after consecutive sweeps at the hands of Northwestern State, Central Arkansas and Houston Baptist.
Following matches this week the Kats will return to Huntsville for their final two matches at Johnson Coliseum of 2019, hosting Northwestern State on November 7 and Central Arkansas on November 9.
