CONWAY, Ark. - The Sam Houston State soccer team fell behind early and could not rally from behind in a 3-0 loss to second-seeded Northwestern State in the opening round of the Southland Conference Tournament Wednesday at the Bill Stephens Soccer Complex.
The Bearkats (7-11-1) only managed one shot on goal in the first half by freshman April Bennett and one in the second half by freshman Alyssa Austin. The Lady Demons (12-7-1), however, took advantage of their opportunities with three goals on five shots in the first half.
Northwestern State's first goal came just a minute into the game when Jayden Wheeler ricocheted a ball of the right post just over the outstretched hands of freshman keeper Tatum Krueger. The ball sailed into the back-left corner of the net.
The Lady Demons added goals from Karleigh Acosta (14th minute) and Kalee Williams (22nd minute) to close out the half.
The Bearkats have had a knack for rallying from behind this season in wins over Central Arkansas, Houston Baptist and McNeese and a tie against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The early three-goal deficit was just too much to overcome.
