FRISCO — Following a dominating performance in Sam Houston State's victory in its nonconference finale, senior forward Kai Mitchell has been named the Southland Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.
The Haverstraw, N.Y., native posted a double-double with a career-high 27 points and 13 rebounds in the Bearkats' 75-61 win over Rice in Houston Sunday. Mitchell was 11 for 17 from the field (64.7 percent) and scored five straight points to open the second half on 3-pointer and layup to help SHSU open up a double-digit lead the Kats never relinquished.
This is the second weekly award Mitchell has earned this season and third of his career.
Earlier this month, he posted a double-double by scoring 18 points and pulling down a career-high 19 rebounds in a double-overtime loss at UTRGV on Dec. 3. He just missed another double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds in the Bearkats' win over Louisiana Tech at Johnson Coliseum on Dec. 8 to earn Player of the Week as well.
