HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State softball team will host its first home game of the 2019 season on Wednesday when it takes on Texas Southern at the Bearkat Softball Complex.
After coming off a 1-for-3 opening weekend at the Houston Invitational, the Bearkats are looking to pick up their second win to propel them further into the season. Although the Bearkats dropped three of four contests played in its season-opening weekend in Houston, Sam Houston still took a number of highs from the weekend. Second baseman Brooke Malia had a huge Sunday game against Big 10 competitor Illinois, going 3-for-4 at the plate, and finishing with a career-best five RBI in the 10-6 win over the Illini.
True freshman pitcher Regan Dunn also had a strong showing in her debut weekend, picking up the win against Illinois in relief. Dunn pitched four innings, striking out four and only allowing two runs. Dunn punched out 11 batters in the 10 innings she logged against No. 22 Oklahoma State and Illinois.
True freshman Kyndal Kutac also notched a pair of hits against Illinois, recording a pair of singles before registering her first home run in the finale against Houston. Megan McDonald and Sheridan Fisher also picked up an RBI apiece.
Senior ace pitcher Lindsey McLeod struck out seven batters over the course of the two games she pitched in against No. 13 Kentucky and tournament host Houston, logging 11.1 innings in total.
Texas Southern is opening up their season against the Bearkats on Wednesday. The Lady Tigers have won the last nine SWAC West Division titles. They placed five players on the preseason all-SWAC teams, returning four .300 hitters from its 2018 starting lineup.
